Light on the wall instead of in your eyes.

A bare bulb on a bedside lamp puts the brightness at face height. A cylinder mounted on the wall sends it up and down the surface instead, so the room gets lighter without anything to look straight into. It takes up no floor space and no bedside table, which in a small bedroom is the whole point.
